Neighborhood Transformation

The Mechanicsville neighborhood has witnessed significant redevelopment in recent years. The Hope VI redevelopment of Mechanicsville Gateway apartment homes and the massive renovation of Dunbar Elementary School (including the addition of the Early Learning and Literacy Resource Center in the school building) are bringing new and returning residents to the community. The renovation of Rosa Burney Park is a critical component of these redevelopment efforts, providing nearby children and families with a wide range of recreation opportunities. The Park, located at 477 Windsor Street, is expected to reopen this summer.

The Atlanta Civic Site has sought to ensure that all improvements at Rosa Burney reflected the community's needs. In 2006, ACS engaged the community in developing a master plan for the park. Through a series of charettes and meetings, community stakeholders created the conceptual design that informed the park's renovation.

The park's renovations include:

  • Construction of a new junior Olympic pool, bathhouse and concession stand;
  • The resurfacing of two existing tennis courts and one existing basketball court along with new fencing and equipment;
  • Design and installation of a new inclusive playground;
  • Replacement of an existing pavilion;
  • Construction of new pathways throughout the park to support neighborhood walking and exercise club;
  • Creation of a Artistic Fence surrounding the new pool;
  • Landscaping to include the installation of trees and shrubs and site furnishings; and
  • Addition of an inviting promenade through the park connecting with the newly renovated Dunbar Elementary School and Early Learning and Literacy Resource Center.
  • A number of public and private funders have supported these renovations, including the City of Atlanta Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, Atlanta Housing Authority, Park Pride, Columbia Residential and Mechanicsville Civic Association.
