University Avenue Study Circles

August Updates

Thank you to all those who participated in last month’s Study Circle kick-off meetings. We look forward to seeing you again this month.  Please see below the updates for each study circle group.

As a reminder, Study Circles are ways for you to get involved with creating the vision for redevelopment along University Avenue (UNAVE). The 31.4 acre property, owned by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is an opportunity for the community (NPU V, X, and Y) to learn about some of the best practices used in development and discuss their implications for the UNAVE project. Construction at University Avenue is not expected until beyond 2009. This is to ensure that the Foundation has created opportunities for residents and others to be meaningfully involved in the planning process. Residents will engage in discussion on key aspects of development that influence UNAVE’s design and construction and will provide recommendations to the Neighborhood Transformation Director by October 2008.

Sustainable Development

Meets Tuesday, August 19 at 7PM
The Sullivan Center
643 Dill Avenue

Facilitators are: David Zaparanick (Capitol View) and Veronica Watson (Capitol View)

This study circle discusses the issue of sustainability and its significance to the UNAVE development. Group members will learn more about sustainability from the prospective of a triple bottom line opportunity (gaining social development, economic development and environmental protection). The group will also consider the ways sustainable development can meet the needs of residents today without comprising the needs of future generations.

Other Information:

  • Members of the study circle group took a brief tour of the UNAVE site on August 5 and her comments from Marti Watts, a Project Manager Silverman Construction Management.  Watts spoke briefly on the Environmental Survey taken on the site in 2006, prior to acquisition and gave a few remarks on the Foundation's approach to demolishing existing structures at UNAVE.  For more information see the Phase I Environmental Survey Executive Summary Report.
